Learning objectives:
  • Participants will be introduced to Act 138 and key reforms made by Act 138 to the School Code;
  • Participants will learn how new procedural provisions—specifically, the requirement that schools create attendance improvement plans and provide verification thereof to the courts—will impact the case management, adjudication, and dispositional aspects of Family Court practice;
  • Participants will understand key considerations in the adjudication and disposition of truancy matters in dependency court, including relevant case law, issues related to school, and unique issues facing older youth;
  • Participants will be introduced to relevant research regarding best practices in truancy prevention and intervention from a developmental perspective.
